Mljet is one of the most densely wooded islands on the Adriatic, often mentioned in stories about Odyssey, St. Paul and the Benedictines. Because of its natural biodiversity and native Adriatic ecosystem the northwestern part of the island was declared a National Park in 1960. National Park District spreads over 5400 hectares, and contains many natural, cultural and historical richness. Some of the most important ones are the system of two salt lakes, Great lake and Small lake on whose shores many endemic plants grow. The surrounding forests is right next to the coast and there are various underground habitats that are typical of karst landscape like caves, half-caves, pits, and brackish litlle lakes that dry up periodically.
Out of whole cultural and historical heritage certainly the most recognizable is the island of St. Mary's with a Benedictine monastery and a church from 12th century located in the middle of the Great Lake. There is also a Roman palace and a fortress and some early Christian basilicas in a sheltered bay near place Polače.
In addition to the cultural and nature sightseeing trip, Mljet also offers relaxation by swimming, sunbathing, and walking or cycling around the lake.
Visiting Mljet from Loviste is possible with various ferries and tourist excursions.
