Nakovana is area (plateau) on the Peljesac peninsula only 5 km away from Loviste, in central part of the area there are two villages Upper and Lower Nakovana that are now deserted, while Nakovana descendants live in neighboring towns Viganj, Kučište and Loviste. It is assumed that the area of Nakovana was settled before 8000 years, as the remnants of the Neolithic period. Archaeologists accidentally discoverd in 1999 the Nakovana Cave, Illyrian richest site in the world, it was discovered thousands of different items, bones, ceramics, quartz and phallus shape stalagmite (Illyrian sanctuary of fertility) which allegedly carried out by various cult rituals 4-1 century BC.
Furthermore around Nakovane there are many historical buildings such as the Illyrian hill GRAD natural fortress and further defined by walls used for attacks on Greek and Roman merchant ships, the Illyrian burial lots, then the medieval churches like the Church of St.. George and the Church of the Little Lady,
which is mentioned in the 14st. but most likely dates from the 12 or 13st., Lower Nakovana is the birthplace of Ivan Lupis Vukic inventor of the torpedo, an archeological museum is going to be build in Lower Nakovana.
Thanks to the work of the Association UZORNA Nakovana area is now protected natural, cultural and historical, destination is visited by many tourists, every year 8th in September the Feast of the Nativity of Mary is held with an all-day cultural program, during festivities up to 1000 people from all over the peninsula visit Nakovana. District Nakovana is a good example of responsible behavior and valuation of cultural and historical sights in tourism.
